Congratulations! You have successfully scheduled your fitness shoot and got yourself a fitness photographer to work with. Now, it’s time for you to prepare for your upcoming gym shoot.
Whether it’s your first time or not, it’s always best to be prepared. So, we have prepared this little guide to help you. Bear in mind that everyone is different, so you should adjust this guide according to your personal circumstances and preferences.
How To Prepare For A Fitness Shoot
Fitness photo shoots are fun and exciting. But if you aren’t exactly prepared for it, then you’ll most likely see yourself regretting it in the end. That’s why we always recommend our clients to be prepared before their photoshoot happens.
Follow these tips for your exercise photoshoot:
Decide On a Location
There are many locations to choose from when doing a fitness photoshoot. That’s why the first thing you need to decide on is the location where you want your fitness photoshoot to happen.
Are you aiming for a natural and realistic concept like a photoshoot in the gym? Or perhaps you want to do it outdoors and be closer to nature — like a park maybe? Or you can also talk to your photographer and do your shoot inside their studio.
Wherever you want your photoshoot to happen, it’s always best to pick a location that best fits your interest and the concept you have in mind.
Consider A Shot List or a Mood Board
If you’re having a hard time choosing a concept for your photoshoot, why not try creating a mood board? Mood boards help a lot in creating a concept for your fitness shoot. It can help you learn what kinds of photos you like the most, and what type of pictures will work best for you.
Fitness photoshoot mood boards — like this one — can help you choose which poses, photos, or concepts you might like to do in your shoot as well.
Decide What To Wear
Deciding what to wear for your fitness photoshoot can be a challenge. But if you already have a concept in mind, or if you have gotten inspiration from the mood board you have created, then it’ll be much easier to decide on your clothing.
We suggest wearing clothes that fit the concept you have on your mood board.
Plan Your Workout
As your photoshoot approaches, we suggest planning on your workout. Doing the right work before your shoot can help you be in peak condition the whole day.
Body Hair Removal
If you want to appear silky smooth in your fitness photos, we recommend undergoing a body hair removal treatment. Whether you go for laser, waxing, depilatory creams, shaving or another method doesn’t matter – just choose what you’re comfortable with. And if you’re going to do it, it’s best done at least 24 hours before your photo shoot so that any redness dies down.
Consider A Spray Tan
Depending on your skin tone, you might want to consider getting a spray tan. Although it’s entirely optional, your photos will look generally good with a tan as it can help define your muscle more.
Cut Off Your Water
Cut down your water on the last final 12 to 18 hours before your shoot. But be careful not to dehydrate yourself.
Avoid Foods That Make You Bloated
We suggest avoiding eating food that makes you bloated days before your shoot and especially on the day of your photoshoot. You will want to look as fit as possible in your fitness photos.
Eat Carbs
Eating carbs hours before your photo shoot is highly recommended. This will help make your muscles look large and full. An energy bar is also a good idea just before your shoot.
Bring More Than One Outfit
Bringing in a few different outfits during your fitness photoshoot is also recommended. Wearing different clothing during a photoshoot can help you have different selections for your fitness photos. You might also want to bring in accessories you want to use during the shoot — like headphones, straps, water bottles, gloves, and more.
Baby Oil
This is entirely an optional thing you can decide on. But if you want to add more effect to your photos, try using baby oil.
